What do these race types mean?

Every race carries two labels: whether the current attorney general is on the ballot, and whether either party is expected to have a real chance of winning.

  • Battleground: A close race that could realistically go either way. Neither side is safe, so both parties spend the most money and campaign time here.
  • Incumbent running: The person holding the office right now is running to keep it. Incumbents usually start ahead because voters already know their name and they have an established donor network.
  • Open seat: The current officeholder is not on the ballot — often because of term limits, retirement, or a run for a different office. With no incumbent defending the seat, both parties start on more equal footing.
